Fall 2007 Town Newsletter
Navarino Athletic Association U.A.
The Navarino Athletic Association U. A. is constructing a roof over the bleachers behind the backstop. This project is funded by the ball team with donations and fundraisers. This will improve our facilities and provide comfort for the fans while enjoying the Ranger and Little League games. The roof will be completed this fall. A thank-you goes to all who helped and donated time and money to this project. The Rangers also have a hall of fame that recognizes past players, fans and supporters of the organization. You can find more information on the Navarino Rangers website located at the following website address. http://eteamz.active.com/NavarinoRangers/
Navarino Area Veterans Memorial
The memorial is progressing on schedule. Depending on the weather this fall the painting of the monument base and the corner stones may need to be completed in the spring. A formal dedication will be planned for May of 2008. Pictures of the memorial will be on the town website. Bill Peeters carved the eagle which provides a nice compliment to the memorial. Thank-you to all who donated time and money for this very deserving honor to all area veterans.
Shioc River State Highway 156 Bridge
The new bridge that replaced the previous bridge built in 1939 was opened for traffic on September 21. The stone has to be painted after the concrete cures for 28 days. This may have to wait till spring depending on our fall weather. The base for the monument of the Veteran’s Memorial will also be painted to match the bridge. The bridge looks great along with the improvements to the landscaping and parking lot by the town hall.
Avery Wilber Memorial Bridge
On February 22, 2007 Assembly bill 106 was introduced to create 84.1023 of the state statutes designating and marking the new bridge on STH 156 as the Avery Wilber Memorial Bridge. The bill is available for scheduling in the Senate and when passed will be sent to the Governor for his signature. A sign will be placed by the bridge honoring Avery.

Navarino/Lessor Fire Department
The fire department went through an ISO evaluation on August 23. The evaluation collects information on the fire protection efforts in communities throughout the United States. They then assign a Public Protection Classification from 1 to 10. Class 1 represents exemplary public protection, and Class 10 indicates that the area's fire suppression program doesn't meet ISO's minimum criteria. By classifying the fire department’s ability to suppress fires, ISO helps communities evaluate their public fire-protection services. The program provides an objective, countrywide standard that helps fire departments in planning and budgeting for facilities, equipment, and training. The program recognizes the efforts of the fire department providing fire-protection services for citizens and property owners. A community's investment in the fire department is a proven and reliable predicator of future fire losses. Insurance companies use the information to help establish fair premiums for fire insurance generally offering lower premiums in communities with better protection. By offering economic benefits for communities that invest in their firefighting services, the program provides a real incentive for improving and maintaining public fire protection.
Town Comprehensive Plan
The Town of Navarino is approximately two-thirds through the comprehensive planning process. The Town, 23 other local units of government, and Shawano County began the comprehensive planning process in January 2006. Since beginning the comprehensive planning process, multiple meetings have been held at the local, cluster, and county levels to identify key planning priorities and plan directions. Additionally, background data has been compiled reflecting current community characteristics and a draft future land use map, depicting the community’s desired future land uses for the 20 year comprehensive planning period, has been created.
The Town Plan Commission met with the Planning Consultants from Vandewalle and Associates on August 14th to review and discuss the land use element of the Town’s comprehensive plan and the associated future land use map. The draft future land use map reflects the results of previous public participation exercises and the land use mapping workshop held on February 13, 2007. The draft future land use map and all other documents prepared as part of the comprehensive planning process for the Town of Navarino is available at: http://www.co.shawano.wi.us/departments/page_6fa4a595042f/?department=c61420c5769b&subdepartment=01f4356074bc.
The Town of Navarino and the other jurisdictions in the Eastern Comprehensive Planning Cluster will be hosting a cluster meeting to share their future land use maps on Tuesday, October 16th 7:00PM at the Shawano Lake Park Pavilion (W5785 Lake Drive). Other items on the meeting agenda include intergovernmental cooperation opportunities, official mapping capabilities, and potential land use conflicts between jurisdictions.
For additional information regarding the comprehensive planning process please contact Melinda Barlow, Shawano County Planner at 715.526.4970 or pndmelin@co.shawano.wi.us.
Building Identification Numbers
The Shawano County Board passed ordinance 5-07 regulating the commonly called 911 signs. The new signs have to replace the old signs by January 1, 2012. The signs will be a flag style plate visible from both sides. All post must be within 10’ of the right side of the driveway as you are looking at the driveway from the road. They also must be placed within 12’ of the shoulder of the road. The town will decide at the 2008 budget meeting if we will replace all signs at one time or phase in the signs over a period of years. This will cost the town approximately $5000.

NAVARINO COMMUNITY PRESCHOOL
Navarino Community Preschool is off to another great year. We were all able to make it, some how, to school the first 2 weeks of school with the finishing of the construction on the bridge. It was very interesting for the children to see the progress of the bridge and all the big equipment that they use.
This fall brings many fun and exciting events for the children. Each year, in October, we spend a morning with the Kindergarten Student at Navarino Elementary during fire prevention week . The children really enjoy their visit a lot. We watch as a firefighter puts on all his equipment, they ask many questions and meet Smokey Bear. Then we get to go outside to see the fire trucks and all the big equipment. We were even allowed to climb up into the trucks and sometimes spray the hoses.
For Thanksgiving we plan and make a Thanksgiving Feast for our parents and family. The children select the menu of favorite foods just like the pilgrims shared their favorite foods. It is always interesting to see what the children will plan
Many wonderful events and activities are being planned for the rest of the year. If you are interested or know any one who is interest in having a child attend next fall you can contact Karly @ 715-758-6376.
